The New York Department of Financial Services (DFS) has sent a letter to insurers regarding fees for personal protective equipment (PPE) charged by to patients by practices. The letter requests that insurers alert dental providers that they CANNOT charge additional fees for PPE!!! The letter further states that insurers DO NOT NEED TO COVER THESE FEES and that dental practices must refund the extra fees collected! Please check your state regulations, don't get scammed by crummy practices!

Many business owners are rich and they don't pay their employees a fair, livable wage. I wish we had a way to force the owners to just take less money home and call the added protections an investment in their business. 🙄

@Yugetube I have, actually. Unfortunately, my actions and choices do not change the behavior of richer business owners. Especially since their choices to pay employees bottom dollar just make themselves even richer, keeping more capital and market share to themselves. If I tried to change their behavior just through my example and influence, I'd be playing a losing game.

I haven't seen a fee yet in my area, but I haven't been out to a restaurant in a while. Not since it has steadily been getting worse. Thankfully, my parents taught me how to cook. I don't see charging people a fee for some of it because it is just stuff you should had been doing anyway; like cleaning and sanitizing the tables. Pandemic or not, I want a clean and sanitized restaurant. Of course, if the government, namely the Senate, would pass a decent sized stimulus then businesses would get that extra bit of help to offset the cost of PPE and consumers would have more money to spend on services to help boost the economy. Many businesses didn't get the assistance they needed in the first stimulus because companies that didn't even qualify were given money and took advantage of loopholes.

You put HEPA filters on everything including vacuums, HVAC, cars etc., so put one on your face. If you want more protection, P100s are rated at 99.9% to 0.3um. Clearly capitalism doesn't work(isn't it suppose to be about survival of the fittest? Or is it survival of the schemerist?). The government should require any business to put in 5% of it's profits in to a deposit only account that can only be withdrawn in times of emergency like this or used to pay for bankruptcy or lawsuits.

So, many of these businesses failed to save money for issues and now the customers have to pay for it? Oh, AND you can bet 100% they will not reduce their prices once covid is over. That covid charge will be reworded in to something else and those businesses will still fail to save money for a "rainy day" and the next time something like this happens it will be the same old story. Oh, BTW, everyone is struggling so why should they get to make profit off the backs of the struggling customers? Oh, and that "social distancing" in the news room is absolutely moronic.

Revelation 7 1 And after these things I saw four angels standing on the four corners of the earth, holding the four winds of the earth, that the wind should not blow on the earth, nor on the sea, nor on any tree. 2 And I saw another angel ascending from the east, having the seal of the living God: and he cried with a loud voice to the four angels, to whom it was given to hurt the earth and the sea. 3 Saying, Hurt not the earth, neither the sea, nor the trees, till we have sealed the servants of our God in their foreheads. 4 And I heard the number of them which were sealed: and there were sealed a hundred and forty and four thousand of all the tribes of the children of Israel. 5 Of the tribe of Juda were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Reuben were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Gad were sealed twelve thousand. 6 Of the tribe of Aser were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Nepthalim were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Manases were sealed twelve thousand. 7 Of the tribe of Simeon were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Levi were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Issachar were sealed twelve thousand. 8 Of the tribe of Zabulon were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Joseph were sealed twelve thousand. Of the tribe of Benjamin were sealed twelve thousand. 9 After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands; 10 And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb. 11 And all the angels stood round about the throne, and about the elders and the four beasts, and fell before the throne on their faces, and worshipped God, 12 Saying, Amen: Blessing, and glory, and wisdom, and thanksgiving, and honor, and power, and might, be unto our God for ever and ever. Amen. 13 And one of the elders answered, saying unto me, What are these which are arrayed in white robes? and whence came they? 14 And I said unto him, Sir, thou knowest. And he said to me, These are they which came out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb. 15 Therefore are they before the throne of God, and serve him day and night in his temple: and he that sitteth on the throne shall dwell among them. 16 They shall hunger no more, neither thirst any more; neither shall the sun light on them, nor any heat. 17 For the Lamb which is in the midst of the throne shall feed them, and shall lead them unto living fountains of waters: and God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes.

I work for a dentist and he applied for, and received, a couple of PPE loans for payroll & supplies. Those loans did NOT have to be paid back, so long as he could prove he utilized the loans for payroll to keep us open and supplying us with PPE. Maybe certain states hold different rules/ laws regarding this, but if we charged EXTRA for PPE, aside from it being illegal, we’d literally be “double-dipping”, because the loans covered our costs AND did not require to be paid back.

Don’t forget spraying the resto once or twice a week. Employees being exposed at all the dirty napkins washing hands constantly, I can mention a million things that guests don’t know how hospitality has change on how to proceed when declining with this pandemia and still keep a smile to offer guests a good time. Use some empathy and take a minute to be in our shoes, pandemia or not I do it with passion. I feel for the business owners. They're spending more to keep their customers safe although I think maybe a raise in prices might be a better way to do it. Consumers obviously would rather not pay more but if you can't afford it save your money and don't go out to eat or get your hair done etc. I'm unemployed and adjusted what I spend. Doesn't seem like these business owners are just trying to get one over on their customers...they're trying to keep their business afloat.

And now I know exactly who has did WHAT with my food. And my stuff tastes better than most dine in places. I can't make good pizza though. That one takes a pizza oven. I still have a Italian pizza joint where I can get a good pizza for cheap. And no mask or crazy fees. I have become friends with the owner guy. He wouldn't do that fee thing to his business.

covid-19 surcharges for luxury and hospitality services is an excellent idea. totally in favor. either let the people who are demanding the extra privilege pay for it themselves, or lock down these businesses so the problem goes away. these people doing the wrong thing should _not_ be used as an excuse to permanently raise the price of everything for everyone. i'm doing the right thing now, and i don't deserve to have my life made harder on the other side of this by having everything shoot up in price by 20%.

Poor business decision. Struggling for customers when a good portion of people are still being rational and not frequenting restaurants and you’re making everything more expensive. There’s absolutely no point to going out to eat at these places. I went to a local eatery one time a few weeks ago and there was about 3 people in the place and I instantly regretted it. Not worth the extra cost, not worth the risk. Order in. I have no sympathy for these places. Yes money is tight but if you really want to encourage people to show up you do your best to keep prices the same. Cut the 45 items off the menu nobody buys, cut back on unnecessary expenditures, use this time to reevaluate and focus on becoming more leaner and efficient and you won’t have to gouge people. So many restaurants out there that burn money and pass the buck to the customer because they choose to buy things they can make and want to have 8 different styles of cuisine on one menu.

Everything is normally priced here. I just try to eat my food a bit faster, considering they have 50 percent capacity that is due to tyrannical restrictions.

Adding a surcharge to a bill after the fact, since you don't see the bill until after you have eaten. It needs to be disclosed before hand by signage allowing the clients to choose or agree to it. In addition the business should just increase the prices to cover the additional cost, in place of adding a surcharge. The businesses can reduce prices after the pandemic is over. I don't visit these back handed businesses. Tell the customer up front don't do an add-on after all is said and done.

@Jo Blow honestly nothing you've said is accurate so far. You most likely have Google too. So idk what your deal is. Do you just answer everyone's questions with a hypothesis? While pretending what you think is simply accurate without any research? Because so far objectively that's what you've done in your previous two comments.

@Jo Blow so what your doing here is claiming that all sorts of establishments haven't seen a decrease in customers, and your projecting that other people are unknowledgeable for believing due to covid, there will most likely be a decrease in dining out, due to an increase in price, that again would factually reduce their demographics. In fact all over the country we are seeing the these affects play out. And its not looking so good. And to simply deny the result, and claim others aren't too bright for simply understanding the results is asinine in itself. Its very debatable who the "extra" costs should fall on. As there are many avenues small eateries can utilize to EASILY.EASILY.EASILY. offset these costs, which I why I disagree with "extra fees". In fact if I owned a small eatery I would see covid as a giant money raking loophole that made everything easier and not more difficult.

You mean they can't do what hospitals do? In fact, hospitals don't let you see the prices at all. Nice isn't it! Of course if you need a hospital then you have no choice but to be fleeced by the rich.

@Virgin? Mary Um, there are no consequences when everyone does it. Do you really think people are going to stop eating out over a few extra bugs? Clearly you then do not understand psychology, conditioning, habituation, and greed.

@Alex Rock-Blake your assuming a business would see no consequence to raising its prices?

I wouldn't ever go back to a place that charged me a Covid surcharge. They should be grateful they are able to open and do any business at all.

In an ideal world, a functioning government would pick up the tab on this “surcharge.”

I get both sides of the fence here. A lot of restaurants are struggling but dang... Could you imagine a 15% COVID surcharge plus a 13% HST charge for us Canadians plus a 15-20% tip (minimum ideally).... That is borderline a 50% charge on top of your food costs. That would be crazy... I can only hope all of this goes away sooner than later!
Yup found it a month or so ago on my bill at local Chinese restaurant - Never going back- I took it out of the tip! In Mass you MUST disclose all costs it needs to be a clearly seen sign stating the charge-

Your mechanic charges a disposal fee if he changes your oil. Your dentist charges a disposal fee as well as your vet sometimes. People can charge whatever they want. But it doesn't mean you have to do business with them. Raising prices is just another way of getting more money, and you can choose to not spend it on eating out, getting your hair/nails done, or other luxury things. The consumer has to swallow extra costs from businesses, who almost never shoulder costs themselves.

@VanGilder Michael To answer your dumb question I'm going to answer with a stupid answer it means another restaurant don't tell nobody it's okay I wanted to help you out. And yes I do have a problem with hidden fees and before you say they're not hidden they are if they don't tell you and you just all of a sudden get them. But I don't have a problem if they tell me about the fees because at least I will know so I can make the decision myself.

You got that right. If any restaurant I eat at adds this fee, it will be the last time I eat there. Period. No exceptions.

They're not using it to keep their doors open. They're using it to stay in the higher income bracket life. "Entrepreneurs" are winners, and shouldn't have to suffer a downgrade from 1st class travel to Coach like the rest of you plebs. And they will tell you so.

they should be cleaning and sanitizing anyway.. charging more to do so is a cop out, if they cant afford to stay open then they can close
